I love saving my selvages for projects.

I bought myself the book Modern Selvage Quilting by Riel Nason, last year, and have been inspired ever since. I’m not typically a pattern follower, but looking through the ideas and different options, did give me several ideas.

I used a base of muslin sized 12×12, to sew my selvage strips on. I took one piece of selvage, that’s at least larger than the base, and started to sew a ¼” from one edge and kept going until the base was completely filled in.

Once the base is covered, then you will probably need to clean up your edges. Use your ruler to guide with the lines to get a nice straight edge.

Once the edge is cleaned up it will look something like this.

Next I lay two of the squares on top of each other with the right sides facing. I stitched a 1/4″ all around and enclose the square completely.

With the 24″ ruler I cut diagonally across the squares. Once you open the pieces up, you see the magic you’ve created.

I love how the colors came out, it’s always different and unique each time. Your design is going to depend on your selvages and how colorful they are.

I made strips that measured 2 1/2″ wide to act as border or sashing for my squares. I chose white to let the colors of the selvages really shine.

 

I decided to make a table runner; my first one. I used different colored scrap fabric to make the binding.

 

I’m excited with how my project came out. I will continue to save my selvages for future projects.
