Wedding Ring Quilt – Feathers Galore

June 4, 2018 By admin Leave a Comment

My customer bought me this picture of a WRQ with a feather design. She requested that it look as close to this as possible.

Pencil drawing, practicing the design to create muscle memory.

Practicing my first stitch out. I can’t quite get the center cross/heart looking design.
2nd sample stitch out.

Feathers, feathers, and more feathers.

Finished WRQ hanging over the long arm machine.

My customer was very happy with the finished design and said it was better than the picture. Woop, woop, yay me.

What’s Black and White and Red All Over?

October 26, 2017 By admin Leave a Comment

Since I’ve started my quilting journey, I’ve wanted to make a black and white quilt. When I went to the Missouri Star Quilt company, I fell in love with the black and white fabric by Vanessa Vargas Wilson for Timeless Treasures called Kinfolk. I started with 10″ squares and used a pattern from the Missouri Star Quilt co. When I saw this graphic black and white pattern, I immediately knew this was the fabric that was speaking to me.

The quilt finally goes on onto the long arm, I can’t wait to play.

Close up of my free motion stitching. I even stitched a secret love note to my husband.

Jennie’s Bargello Quilt

July 30, 2017 By admin Leave a Comment

Jennie and I had so much fun planning a design for her beautiful Bargello quilt. I quilted this on my long arm Bernina Q20. Together, Jennie and played with a pattern and went with a very loose free-hand flower vine.

It was hard to believe, but Jennie said she wasn’t that thrilled with her quilt, I thought she was cuckoo, I loved this quilt! I told her she could give it to me if she doesn’t want it. But once the quilting was done, she was in love with her finished product.

After we removed it from the long arm, Jennie trimmed it and was all smiles.

I look forward to doing more work with Jennie on her finished quilts.

Long Arm Quilting Services Now Available

Mojo Quilts – Long Arm Quilting Services

We are very happy to now be able to offer long arm quilting services to our customers on our beautiful Q20 Bernina. Many quilters enjoy the piecing part of quilting, and never get their quilts finished, that’s where Mojo Quilts can help.

Pricing is done by the square inch, and complexity of the design.

You can provide your own Backing and/or Batting for your quilt. If you prefer, Mojo Quilts can provide the batting, we use Hobbs 80/20; this will be $11.00 per yard. Backing fabric will be a basic cotton design that will complement the quilt top; this will be $14.00 per yard.

NOTE: Due to the monetary and sentimental value of your quilts, we only ship quilts via U.P.S., FedEx or Express mail for tracking purposes.

At this time, we will not be offering binding services for your quilt. However, we can serge the edges for free as a starter bonus. If you would prefer your quilt sent back to you straight off the machine without any trimming, we can send it back that way as well.

Shop Fee: $45.00 minimum. Estimate will be based upon the size of the quilt, complexity of design, and the materials used. To request an estimate, email us at mojoquilts2017@gmail.com, be sure to provide a valid return email address.

Freehand

Pricing: .015¢ (1.5 Cents) per square inch; $45.00 minimum
Similar to Pantograph, freehand quilting is repeated across your quilt top, ignoring blocks and borders. Freehand quilting designs include such designs as large stippling, landscaping, paisley, and ivy.

Custom Design
Pricing: .035¢ (3 1/2 Cents) per square inch; $45.00 minimum
Each piece is evaluated and designs are chosen to fill your quilt from border to border. This may include stitch-in-the-ditch, rippling freehand, meandering, and/or an overall design.

Pantograph
Pricing: .045¢ (4 1/2 Cents) per square inch; $45.00 minimum
Quilting consists of one design repeated across your quilt top, ignoring blocks and borders.

Quilt Basting
Pricing: .01¢ (1 Cent) per square inch; $45.00 minimum
Basting quilts is a large stitch along across the length and width of the quilt.

Thread will be matched as closely as possible to your quilt. There will be a $5.00 minimum charge on thread. Variegated threads will be a $7.50 charge. We like to use cone threads so please do not bring small spools to be used.

To Calculate Your Quilt Price measure your width and length X it by the preferred quilting style you want.

Example width of quilt (90″) length of quilt (102″) X Freehand .015¢ (1.5 Cents) = $137.70

Here are some standard quilt sizes for calculating backing yardage:

  • Crib quilts: 50 x 53″ – 1 3/8 yard which would do 2 baby quilts length ways
  • Twin bed quilts: 75″ x 98″ – 2 1/8 yards
  • Double bed quilts: 83 x 106″ – 83 x 106″ 2 1/3 yards
  • Queen size quilts: 90 x 106″ – 2 1/2 yards
  • King size quilts: 107 x 108″ – 3 1/3 yards

Standard quilting requires 4″ for each side and 6″ on the bottom.

You should properly prepare your quilt before sending it to us, this will ensure you get the best results.  Here are a few simple tips to help get your beautiful quilt ready for the final step of its journey.

One your quilt top is done, there are a few steps to take to help produce the best possible results. Preparing the quilt top is a team effort. Mojo Quilts wants you to be completely in love with your finished quilt.

Preparing the quilt top:

Once the quilt top is made, look to see if there are seams around the outer edges. If so, baste through these seams about 1/8″ in from the edge; this will ensure the seams don’t pop open when loaded onto the longarm. The binding will eventually cover up these basting stitches too. You may have to baste around the entire quilt if there are multiple seams or just baste through each seam if there are only a few.

Clip Threads:

If the quilt top has a light fabric that might easily show loose threads from the underside, clip those threads. No one wants to see a red thread underneath a nicely quilted area on the quilt top. Some fabrics seem to fray a lot. If you find this is the case, a small dot of Fray Check will help curb those unruly threads!

Make sure your quilt top is squared and even on all four sides. Otherwise, it cannot be loaded onto the longarm. Press the quilt top and fold neatly.

Batting options:

Ask yourself how your quilt will be used. Do you want the quilting to show or simply hold the quilt together? The batting choice can make a difference, and a good quality batting is very important.

We use Hobbs 80/20 batting as a preference. If you send your own batting, please make sure there is enough to extend past the quilt at least 4-5” on all sides. We can discuss this in detail in the pre-quilting stage.

Preparing the backing for long arm quilting:

You can choose to purchase an extra wide backing fabric, measuring up to 110”, or you could try piecing the back together.

The backing can be as simple as an extra strip sewn to one side or pieced together with a few unused quilt blocks or a variety of leftover fabrics. Stitch 5/8” seams when piecing the back and press them open. This helps spread the bulk.

The quilt back should measure approximately 4”- 6” larger than the quilt top. Square up the backing on all four sides. Press the backing and fold neatly.

Caution on piecing the quilt back:

Stay away from creating a symmetrical look; this can be problematic once the quilt is rolled onto the machines, it makes it difficult to guarantee symmetry especially if the backing fabric stretches a bit. A solid background is best or an uneven design on the back.

Scrappy Gravity Quilt

April 8, 2017 By admin Leave a Comment

This beautiful Scrappy Quilt is truly one of a kind. I was inspired to try making this block of the month pattern after someone in my Modern Quilt Guild made one exactly to pattern specs.

I went to purchase the fat quarters for the inner star and realized this would be even costlier than planned. My goal was then to make it with only the scraps I had on hand. The inner star is made up of various batik fabrics, sari’s, home decor, and specialty fabrics. The outer gray, and black fabrics are from MODA. The majority of the quilt is made of 100% cotton. The batting is 100% cotton, and was long arm quilted. This finished size is close to 96″x96″.

I’m truly in love with this quilt and feel I pushed myself with the layout and design. I know it would make a great addition to anyone’s quilt collection.

Here are a few detailed pics of the finished product.

This quilt is available on my Etsy page at: https://www.etsy.com/listing/523670309/scrappy-gravity-quilt?ref=pr_shop
